Dev Patel is pulling double duty in the upcoming action-thriller Monkey Man, produced by horror heavy hitter Jordan Peele; Patel will be making his directorial debut and starring in the film.
The legend of “Hanuman” inspires the movie, an icon embodying strength and courage. Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club. Night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution. He sets out to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.
Patel makes his directorial debut. However, he is best known for his roles in films such as Slumdog Millionaire, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Lion. The cast includes Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Sikandar Kher, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Ashwini Kalsekar.
Patel co-wrote the screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. Producers include Patel, Peele, Jomon Thomas, Win Rosenfeld, Ian Cooper, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Christine Haebler, and Anjay Nagpal. Jonathan Fuhrman, Natalya Pavchinskya, Aaron L. Gilbert, Andria Spring, Alison-Jane Roney, and Steven Thibault are executive producing.
