We’ve got great news boils and ghouls! Eighty years after they started sending shivers down spines with iconic horror comics like “Tales from the Crypt” and “The Vault of Horror,“ EC Comics is making a chilling comeback! Partnering with Oni Press, known for hits like “Scott Pilgrim,” the legendary brand is set to resurrect in 2024. It will be unleashing a horde of all-new stories crafted by A-list creations.
From Crypt Keeper to Modern Masters:
Oni Press publisher Hunter Gorinson expresses his reverence for EC’s legacy. “EC Comics is one of the most artistically important and culturally significant publishers of all time.” He emphasizes that the new iteration will “uphold and escalate” the tradition of “radically confrontational storytelling” that once shocked and enthralled readers, THR reports.
Gorinson assures fans that the new EC Comics won’t simply be nostalgia trips. He promises an “evolution” of the brand’s “relentless energy and fearless sensibilities,” tailoring them to the anxieties and complexities of the 21st century. “These are intense comics for our intense times,” he declares.
Epitaphs From the Abyss Leads the Charge:
The first chilling title to emerge from the reborn EC Comics lineup is “Epitaphs from the Abyss,” hitting shelves in July. Following closely in August is “Cruel Universe,” both promising to deliver spine-tingling tales in the classic anthology format.
A Haunting Legacy Revived:
EC Comics‘ inception in 1944 marked a turning point in horror comics. They captivated audiences with their dark themes, social commentary, and gruesome visuals. While facing criticism and eventual censorship, the brand left an indelible mark on the genre. Its return, spearheaded by passionate creators and publishers, promises to breathe new life into its chilling legacy while resonating with contemporary audiences.
While the initial announcement excites, a question lingers: Who are the A-list creators? Well, that news will come, and we’ll be sure to let you know when it does.
Tales from the Crypt:
First published in the 1950s, “Tales from the Crypt” is a title every single horror fan knows. In June of 1989, a series adaptation of the anthology comic, created by Steven Dodd and William Gaines, premiered on HBO. It introduced generations of fans to horror as it told demented tales filled with thrills and chill. It was hosted by the iconic Crypt Keeper. Several films and an animated series followed. And as a fan myself, I truly hope EC will bring it back!
