The chilling case of the West Mesa Murders is set to be the subject of a new docuseries. The horrifying discovery of 11 women’s remains in the New Mexico desert in 2009 shocked the nation and sparked one of the most complex criminal investigations in recent history.
Director Asif Akbar, who just released the film Boneyard (inspired by the same case), will helm the docuseries. He joins forces with producers Vincent E. McDaniel and Brian A. Metcalf to delve deep into the heart of this unsolved mystery, Deadline reports.
The series promises to examine the case comprehensively. It will feature interviews with victims’ families, witnesses, and law enforcement officials. Archival footage and clips from Boneyard will also be incorporated to provide a multifaceted perspective.
While the possibility of a serial killer is suspected, other theories have been explored, including human trafficking. The case remains unsolved despite numerous leads and potential suspects.
With a team of experienced filmmakers at the helm, this docuseries aims to shed new light on the West Mesa Murders and bring justice, if not closure, to the victims’ families.
Akbar’s Boneyard stars Mel Gibson alongside Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Brian Van Holt. In the film, the skeletal remains of eleven women and girls are discovered in the New Mexico desert. Detective Ortega (Brian Van Holt), Police Chief Carter (Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson), and Agent Petrovick (Mel Gibson) join a multi-agency effort to identify and apprehend the killer, known as the “Bone Collector”. Quickly, suspicion forms that someone from their own department may be involved.
The film is based on the events surrounding the West Mesa Bone Collector. In February 2009, a woman walking her dog made a grim discovery: human remains. Eleven bodies in all were discovered, all women between the ages of 15 and 32. Several suspects have been pursued. However, no one has ever been charged. A $100,000 reward is currently offered to anyone with information leading to an arrest. Please contact the Alberqurqie Polic Department if you have any information.
While we wait for the docuseries’ premiere date to be announced, watch Boneyard, now on VOD from Lionsgate.
