Stephen King fans, get ready! 2025 will be the year of Stephen King. Multiple adaptations of King’s stories and books are headed your way, including The Monkey, Life of Chuck, and The Running Man. Let’s not forget the Salem’s Lot adaptation was just released.
Next comes the highly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s 600-page 2022 bestselling novel, Fairy Tale. After years of being trapped in developmental limbo, it is shifting from the big screen to the small screen.
Fairy Tale will now become a 10-episode TV series. It will hail from hitmaker A24, behind Hereditary, Talk to Me, and Ti West’s “X” trilogy. Paul Greengrass, who was initially set to write, produce, and direct the film adaptation, will remain involved in the project, serving as an executive producer. J.H. Wyman, behind the series “Almost Human” and “Fringe,” will serve as the showrunner.
The story centers on Charlie Reade, who looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, and a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. Charlie’s mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was ten, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie turns 17, he meets a dog named Radar and his aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes, strange sounds emerge from it.
Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch. When Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows and has kept secret all his long life is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.
