It has been announced that Anthony Ramos and Ben Mendelsohn will star in Molepeople, an upcoming horror film exploring the dark and mysterious world beneath the streets of New York City.

The film, directed by Rob Savage (The Boogeyman, Dashcam, Host), promises a nightmarish journey into the city’s subterranean depths. Specific plot details remain under wraps, and whether the movie is a modern reimagining of the 1956 classic remains.

The original black-and-white film, directed by Virgil W. Vogel and not set in New York, is based on the “hollow earth” theory and depicts the discovery of an underground civilization.

Broadway star turned actor Anthony Ramos is best known for musicals like Hamilton and In the Heights. He also starred in 2024’s hit movie Twisters. Ben Mendelsohn has starred in films like The Dark Knight Rises and 2023’s The Marsh King’s Daughter, which is now available to stream on Hulu.

Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures will produce the film.

“Molepeople fuels a modern audience with shocks and thrills, captivating, heightened feelings of fear. Rob’s direction is stylish; BoulderLight’s understanding of modern audiences is unmatched – and together the filmmakers are best in class,” said Embankment Film’s  Hugh Grumbar.

Molepeople is poised to be a fright-filled exploration of the unknown under the bustling streets of the “Big Apple.” Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new horror project.
