Kinetic Games’ ghost-hunting game Phasmophobia was a massive hit on PC after it came out four years ago. It has recently found its audience grown after the game was released on PlayStation 5 this year and is now finding a new home with Xbox players, like yours truly. This is a game preview as the port to Xbox is still a work in progress, but I want to thank Xbox for sending over the game for me to preview!
Phasmophobia (which is also the name for the phobia for those who fear ghosts) is a ghost-hunting simulation game in which players either play alone or with friends as they investigate haunted locations, try to identify the type of ghost that haunts the location, and survive.
I’ve seen multiple playthroughs by one of my favorite streamers and their friends, but I will say there’s a difference between watching and playing the game yourself, as it hits differently! When you’re the one (and in my case, only one) hunting a ghost, it’s quite terrifying, and I LOVE IT!
As someone who has gone ghost hunting for real, it’s a mix of realism and fantasy, the realism being that it can be spooky if you let it, the kind of equipment being used, but the fantasy part being that you have activity happening a lot because to be quite honest, ghost hunting can be quite uneventful if not downright boring. What I’m trying to say is take what happens in Phasmophobia with a grain of salt when it comes to how eventful ghost hunting can be, and 100% of the time the dangers you face while ghost hunting is NOT paranormal.
Overall, the hype for Phasmophobia is warranted, and that it has now come to consoles is amazing. If you want to get the game preview for your own Xbox, you can get it HERE, and I’ll repeat what is said in the store about this being a preview:
This game is a work in progress. It may or may not change over time or release as a final product. Purchase only if you are comfortable with the current state of the unfinished game.
Here’s to hoping that the preview will be the full release in due time!
