Today, via Instagram, Lee Cronin teased a script with the title scratched out and the message, “Something terrifying will be unleashed in 2026.” Well, we know what’s coming. Cronin has written and will direct a new film titled The Mummy, and we’re absolutely here for it! What’s more, it already has a release date. It will hit theaters on April 17, 2026!

Writer-director Lee Cronin describes it as “unlike any Mummy movie you’ve ever laid eyeballs on before. I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.”

Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are behind the film, which will be produced by James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville. Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Macdara Kelleher are executive producers. Alayna Glasthal oversees the project for Atomic Monster. Atomic Monster, Blumhouse, and Cornin’s Doppelgängers are also producing.

The question remains if The Mummy will be considered a new version of Universal’s classic monster franchise. It can pretty much be guaranteed to be a better movie than the 2017 flop starring Tom Crusie, which was universally panned. It could also be a new take on The Mummy franchise starring Brandon Frasier. Then again, it may be a completely different beast altogether. We’ll just have to wait until more details surface. Either way, we are looking forward to it.

Cronin is already a regular fixture in the horror genre, being behind films like Evil Dead Rise, The Hole in the Ground, segments of “50 States of Fright,” and “Minutes Past Midnight.” Of course, everyone recognizes Blumhouse for its significant contribution to the genre. The same applies to James Wan (The Conjuring) and his Atomic Monster banner.
