After years of hopes and rumors, Warner Bros. is reigniting the mischievous magic of the Mogwai with Gremlins 3, a new installment of the beloved horror-comedy franchise.

Excitingly, Christopher Columbus, the writer of the original, iconic 1984 film, is set to helm Gremlins 3. This news comes from a recent Warner Bros. announcement revealing its upcoming slate. It includes projects like Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Practical Magic 2, and a new Matrix film.

Thankfully, the movie will not be a reboot but a sequel. Gremlins 3 will continue the story established in the original film and its 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. It follows the misadventures of Billy Peltzer and the mischievous Mogwai, Gizmo.

The original Gremlins, directed by Joe Dante and written by Christopher Columbus, became an instant cult classic when it was released in 1984. It is known for its blend of humor, horror, heartwarming moments, and the adorable Mogwai. Columbus returned to co-write the sequel—this time around, as well as direct.

Christopher Columbus has a long track record of making great films. He is involved not only with the Gremlins franchise but also produced the Harry Potter franchise and, most recently, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu.

While no release date has been announced, the fact that the sequel is finally moving forward after years of waiting is enough to excite fans. We’ll keep you posted as more news surfaces. In the meantime, watch Gremlins and Gremlins: The New Batch on Prime Video or Fandango at Home.
