A24, renowned for its diverse and boundary-pushing filmography, including Hereditary, the “X” trilogy, and the recently released film Heretic, has unveiled a new Death of a Unicorn trailer ahead of its SXSW premiere. This darkly comedic film, written and directed by Alex Scharfman, offers a unique blend of humor, horror, and magical mayhem.

Death of a Unicorn boasts a stellar ensemble cast, featuring Paul Rudd (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Jenna Ortega (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), Will Poulter (We Are the Millers), Téa Leoni (Jurassic Park III), and Richard E. Grant (Gosford Park).

The story follows a father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega). The two accidentally kill a unicorn during a road trip to a weekend retreat hosted by the father’s eccentric boss, a pharmaceutical magnate. Upon discovering the creature’s existence, the boss becomes obsessed with exploiting its miraculous curative properties for profit. However, their plans quickly unravel when another unicorn, driven by vengeance, unleashes chaos upon the group.

Making his feature directorial debut, Alex Scharfman is a seasoned industry veteran behind films like Blow the Man Down, House of Spoils, and Resurrection. His extensive experience in short film production further underscores his versatility as a filmmaker.

The trailer showcases the film’s distinctive visual style and darkly comedic tone. It hints at a narrative that seamlessly blends fantastical elements with social satire, creating a unique and engaging cinematic experience.

Death of a Unicorn is scheduled for a theatrical release in Spring 2025. The blend of fantasy, comedy, and a touch of horror promises a wild ride for viewers.
