If we’re talking about VFX Masters, Alec Gillis stands out for his talent, creativity, and the sheer number of outstanding films and series he’s been involved with. Many are iconic for their standing in horror and sci-fi. Gillis has won two Oscars and worked on films like the Predator and Alien franchises, including Alien: Romulus. He created the monsters we love to fear, from Graboids in the Tremors franchise, giant bugs in Starship Troopers, Godzilla and Kong, dinosaurs in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Smile, to the strange in The X-Files.

Learning from a Master

The special effects master got his start in 1980 with Roger Corman’s sci-fi film, Battle Beyond the Stars. Now, Gillis will host an episode of Shout TV’s “Double Take” on April 5 to celebrate Corman’s birthday and legacy. And there couldn’t be anyone better to host it. In our recent interview, Gillis described Corman as an “idol” of his and talked at length about Corman’s talent and influence.

A Movie To See

Corman was not the only topic of our conversation. Gillis also discussed his previous works, the direction of special effects, and his newly released film, Wellwood, from his studio, Amalgamated Dynamics Inc.

Wellwood tells the story of a desperate couple, Laura and Nick, facing Laura’s terminal illness. Nick’s search for a cure leads him to an alien entity, believing it holds the answer. Their actions draw the attention of local law enforcement, Deputy Gracie Marsh, and Sheriff Bradley. Pursuing their cure, they trigger unforeseen consequences that unravel their lives and community.

Talking with Gillis was an absolute pleasure. I will confess, I may have had a “fangirl” moment (or two). He’s such an enormous part of film history. Hearing him talk about the iconic films and directors I love was amazing. I can’t wait to see what comes next!
