If you’re looking for something beyond the usual jump scares and predictable plots, then we have a movie for you: The Assessment. It debuted today on digital platforms courtesy of Magnolia Pictures.
This isn’t a feel-good flick, folks. The Assessment, directed by the talented Fleur Fortuné, dives deep into the murky waters of psychological thriller territory. The story throws us into a not-so-distant future where things have gotten… complicated. Resources are stretched thin, and the government has a tight grip on something pretty fundamental: reproduction.
An Unnerving Premise
At the heart of this world are Mia, played by Elizabeth Olsen (Wind River), and Aaryan, played by Himesh Patel (Station Eleven). They’re a successful couple with a big dream: to become parents. But starting a family in the future is not as simple as it seems.
Enter Virginia, played by the Oscar-winning Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl). Virginia is an assessor about to become a very intimate part of Mia and Aaryan’s lives. Virginia must move into their home for seven days to evaluate whether they are worthy of parenthood.
Mia and Aaryan hope it will be a straightforward, albeit slightly intrusive, routine test. However, it quickly spirals into a full-blown psychological nightmare. Virginia’s presence starts to unravel the carefully constructed normalcy of their lives. They are forced to confront uncomfortable truths about themselves and each other. As the days tick by, they begin to question the very foundations of their society – the rules and the underlying reasons for this intense regulation of human life.
Some familiar faces are adding to the already stellar cast. We’ve got the brilliant Minnie Driver, the intensely captivating Indira Varma, the compelling Nicholas Pinnock, the wonderfully versatile Charlotte Ritchie, and the incredibly talented Leah Harvey rounding out this ensemble. When a cast is this stacked, the performances will be top-notch.
