Alright, Happy Death Day fans, get ready to party (again)! Our favorite time-loopy horror-comedy franchise isn’t done with us yet. Jessica Rothe, the absolute queen of surviving those endless deaths, just dropped some major news at a double feature screening of the first two movies. And guess what? She said the long-awaited third installment is officially “moving forward”!

Yep, you heard that right. Rothe took the stage at the American Cinematheque, and right there with her was Christopher Landon, the director who brought all that time-traveling terror and hilariousness to life. And Landon backed her up, confirming that “it is moving forward.” Cue the cheers (and maybe a few screams of excitement)! He then took to “X” to share the news.

The Franchise Continues

It’s been a long six years since Happy Death Day 2U hit theaters, and fans have been scratching their heads, wondering why we haven’t gotten more of Tree Gelbman’s (Rothe) wild ride. It’s not like the franchise wasn’t successful, right? Landon even spilled the tea recently, revealing that Universal and Blumhouse were tossing around the idea of a three-part miniseries for Peacock. But, as we know, that never materialized.

Let’s rewind a bit. Back in 2020, Landon let slip that the working title for the third movie was Happy Death Day to Us, and he hinted that it would be “different than the other two films.” Intriguing, right?

Rothe expressed her desire to complete the trilogy in a 2020 interview with Coming Soon. She said, “I would love if we had the opportunity to complete the trilogy. I know that Chris has it all mapped out in his genius brain, but I also know that we only want to complete it if we get to do it right. I think it’s just a question of seeing if the opportunity for that exists in the world.”

And she even gave us a glimpse into the potential future of Tree Gelbman, saying, “But the funny thing is I have a feeling whether it’s now or in five years or ten or twenty, if we pull a Jamie Lee Curtis from ‘Halloween’ and Tree comes back as a badass 50-year-old, I know that we will get to tell the rest of the story. I love Tree, I love that character so much and I feel very, very grateful to have been a part of that.”

In the Meantime…

So, where does this leave us? Well, it’s safe to assume that Happy Death Day 3 is still in the very early stages of development. But this is the first real confirmation that the project has any green light. So, keep your eyes peeled for more news! We’ll definitely be keeping you updated. In the meantime, you can rewatch Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U now on Apple TV. And head to theaters for London’s new horror-thriller Drop, which is being unleashed on April 11th.
