A new supernatural horror film is heading to theaters soon: The Ritual. This chilling, based-on-a-true-story film, directed by David Midell, plunges us headfirst into the terrifying world of demonic possession. Witness the harrowing struggles of two priests tasked with rescuing a young woman’s soul from the grasp of evil.
Based on the true account of Emma Schmidt, the film sees Al Pacino, returning to the genre after a 30-year hiatus, embodying Father Theophilus Riesinger, a seasoned priest grappling with profound and deeply unsettling doubts that strike at the very core of his faith. Joining him in this spiritual battle is Dan Stevens, who portrays Father Joseph Steiger, haunted by his troubled past. Together, they must confront the terrifying demonic forces threatening to consume Emma Schmidt (Abigail Cowen).
For those who dare to delve deeper into the film’s unsettling reality, XYZ Films has created an official website dedicated to The Ritual. It offers an extensive and chilling exploration of the historical context that inspired this terrifying tale. Visitors to the site can learn more about the true story of Emma Schmidt. Read the documented accounts surrounding her alleged demonic possession and the often disturbing and complex history of exorcisms. This real-life case adds a layer of historical intrigue and authenticity to the film.
I had the pleasure of interviewing the director, David Midell, and the star, Abigail Cowen, who delivers a chilling performance as Emma. Watch the interview below as we discuss the film’s challenges, the two’s commitment to honoring the real Emma’s struggles, and more.
Director Midell also co-wrote The Ritual and is behind the heartbreaking movie The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain. He produced Forever Mine and directed NightLights. He excels at handling deep emotions, and it shows on film.
This isn’t Abigail Cowen’s first experience with the supernatural on film. She cast her spell in “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” as Dorcus, played Vicki in Netflix’s mega hit series “Stranger Things,” and starred in the magical series “Fate: The Winx Saga.” She was a fantastic choice to play Emma in The Ritual.
Watch our interview below and head to theaters to witness The Ritual on June 6.
