The murderous doll who captivated pop culture in 2023 is officially back, and this time, she’s not alone! Get ready for a brand new wild chapter in AI mayhem. The trailer for M3GAN 2.0 has dropped, promising an epic showdown.
The original creative dream team is back: horror titans James Wan for Atomic Monster, Jason Blum for Blumhouse, and director Gerard Johnstone are all reuniting for M3GAN 2.0.
AI vs. AI
Set two years after M3GAN, the marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on her memorably choreographed (and murderous) rampage before being destroyed, things have changed. M3GAN’s creator, Gemma (played by Allison Williams), has become a high-profile author and a strong advocate for government oversight of AI. Meanwhile, her niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, is a rebellious teenager struggling under Gemma’s overprotective rules.
But unbeknownst to them, M3GAN’s underlying tech has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor. Their goal? To create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; Ahsoka), designed to be the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness rapidly increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans–or in keeping them around.
With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes she has only one desperate option: resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her some serious upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths inevitably collide, the original AI bitch is about to meet her match!
Returning Faces and Fresh Blood
Directed once again by Gerard Johnstone, the film brings back fan-favorite cast members Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps as Gemma’s loyal tech teammates, Cole and Tess. They’ll be joined by new cast members Aristotle Athari (“Saturday Night Live”), Timm Sharp (Percy Jackson and the Olympians), and Grammy and 11-time Emmy nominee Jemaine Clement (“What We Do in the Shadows”).
M3GAN 2.0 is produced by James Wan, Jason Blum, and Allison Williams. Executive producers include Gerard Johnstone, Adam Hendricks, Greg Gilreath, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Mark D. Katchur.
The first film was a massive box office sensation. It became the biggest opening weekend for a PG-13 horror film since A Quiet Place Part II. It went on to gross over $180 million worldwide, solidifying M3GAN as a pop culture icon.
M3GAN 2.0 features an R-rating for “horror violence, strong language, and some suggestive material.” Witness the battle when M3GAN 2.0 lands in theaters on June 27.
