As part of its first-ever “The Business of Fear” event in Hollywood, where it is examining the booming power of horror subgenres, Blumhouse dropped a major announcement: it is officially developing a film adaptation of the incredibly popular and critically acclaimed paranormal horror game, Phasmophobia!
Since its early access launch in 2020, Phasmophobia has been a massive success, selling over 23 million copies globally. It has truly become a genre-defining title in the horror gaming genre, thanks to its unique blend of immersive paranormal investigation and thrilling gameplay. The game has built a super passionate global community. And earned tons of praise, even winning the “Best Debut Game” award at The 2020 Game Awards. PC Gamer even called it “the best ghost game ever made!”
The Phasmophobia film will be produced by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster in association with Kinetic Games Limited, based on the original video game by Kinetic Games Limited.
Diving Deep into the Business of Fear
This announcement comes as Blumhouse highlights the growing strength of various horror subgenres. The paranormal subgenre, in particular, is one of 24 thriving categories Blumhouse identified in a research study last year. This study aimed to gain a clearer understanding of the current state of horror, examining genres ranging from Survival and Slasher to Psychological Thrillers and beyond.
Blumhouse CEO and Founder Jason Blum, along with President Abhijay Prakash and Atomic Monster’s Alyona Glasthal, as well as horror analyst and author Stephen Follows, discussed the recent growth and expansion of the horror genre. They emphasized that these diverse subgenres are crucial to catering to the varied tastes of today’s horror audience.
The Game
From Kinetic Games, Phasmophobia is a four-player co-op psychological horror game. In it, paranormal activity is on the rise. It’s up to the team to use all the ghost-hunting equipment at their disposal to gather as much evidence as they can. We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, watch the game trailer below.
