A chilling new take on a holiday classic is heading your way! In addition to his upcoming werewolf film Werwulf, visionary filmmaker Robert Eggers (The Witch, Nosferatu) will also direct a new adaptation of A Christmas Carol.
A Reunion
Eggers will write and direct his unique adaptation of Charles Dickens’ timeless ghost story, initially published in 1843. His frequent collaborator, the talented Willem Dafoe, is reportedly being eyed to play Ebenezer Scrooge! While Deadline clarifies that no official negotiations are underway, sources indicate that Eggers is specifically writing the role for Dafoe. This makes him the top choice for the iconic miser.
Dafoe, who would be an amazing Scrooge. Dafoe is a frequent collaborator with Eggers, having starred in The Lighthouse, The Northman, and most recently, Nosferatu.
This combination of Eggers’ signature atmospheric dread and Dafoe’s intense acting prowess promises a truly unforgettable, and likely very dark, adaptation of The Christmas Carol. And we are totally here for it!
A Familiar Tale
The holiday classic tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. He is a curmudgeonly, miserly businessman who has no time for sentimentality. He views Christmas as a waste of time. However, this particular Christmas Eve, he is visited by three spirits – the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. They show him the error of his ways, leading to a profound transformation.
A Christmas Carol is, at its heart, a period piece ghost story, making it perfect fodder for Robert Eggers to put his distinctive, unsettling stamp on it. Eggers’ proven ability to craft unsettling historical narratives with a strong sense of dread makes him an ideal choice to lean into the horror elements of the tale.
The film, from Warner Bros., will be produced by Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus, who also served as producer for Nosferatu.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates on Robert Eggers‘ A Christmas Carol. We can’t wait to see Egger’s vision for a new take on the iconic classic.
