When it comes to canceled TV shows, there are two that fans will all agree are the most heartbreaking. One is “Hannibal,” and the other is Netflix’s crime series “Mindhunter.” While regrettably, there are still no signs of a new season of “Hannibal,” “Mindhunter” might still have a chance, and we’re keeping our fingers (and toes) crossed.
Recently, CBR shared the news that more “Mindhunter” may very well be on the horizon. During its six-year hiatus, producer David Fincher has delivered several films; however, I think we can all agree that what we truly want is a new season of the serial killer series.
Holt McCallany, who stars in the series as Bill Tench, is giving us hope. Recently, the actor told CBR that he’s met with Fincher about a potential return to “Mindhunter” in the form of three two-hour films. But that’s not all, he also stated that there are people writing scripts. There was also a hint that the new installments may be waiting on the series’ other star, Jonathan Groff, to become available.
“So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance. I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.” McCallany states.
“And I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all. I would love it if it were to return. I think, like I said, you know, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had that meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align. The good news is that we’re at Netflix with The Waterfront, and those movies would also be for Netflix. So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that’s a big question mark.”
The Future
Currently, Fincher is in pre-production on his film, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, and is working on a follow-up to Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. So his hands are full at the moment.
Here’s an interesting fact: Once Upon a Time and “Mindhunters” did have a bit of crossover. Damon Herriman played Charles Manson in both the series and the film.
While it may be a minute until we see “Mindhunter” return in some form or another, the point is, it’s coming, according to McCallany. And we can’t f*cking wait!
A Refresher
For those who need a refresher, the “Mindhunter” series is set in the late 1970s. It follows two FBI agents who broaden the realm of criminal science by investigating the psychology behind murder and end up getting too close to real-life monsters.
The series also gained recognition for its excellent casting, featuring actors who bore a striking resemblance to the real-life killers. This includes the downright spooky appearance and impressive performance of Cameron Britton as Edmund Kemper. He looks, sounds, and moves like the killer.
Hope
While there has been no confirmation yet from Fincher or Netflix about a new season or Mindhunter movies, it’s enough to give us all hope. Besides, with two projects currently on Fincher’s plate, it would take time before pre-production on a Mindhunter film could begin. A major studio like Netflix wouldn’t likely make the announcement until it does, so we aren’t surprised that it’s been radio silence so far.
Here’s a look back at the trailer for the first season. You can watch the first two seasons now on Netflix. We recommend that you do so if you somehow missed it.
