Fans have clamored for years for another chapter in the terrifying 28 Days Later saga. The wait is officially over! One of the biggest horror films of the year, 28 Years Later, is finally in theaters. It’s already a massive hit. It raked in $30 million during its opening weekend – triple the amount the original film earned.

With numbers like that, it’s no surprise that a sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will hit theaters in just 30 weeks, arriving in January 2026! However, the release date could have been epic if it had been set for just two weeks earlier, making it “28 Weeks Later.” But there’s still a chance it will be moved up.

A New Threat Emerges

28 Years Later introduces us to a new group of survivors who’ve found a semblance of safety on a small island. This refuge is connected to the desolate mainland by a single, heavily fortified causeway. But when a group member embarks on a perilous mission into the dark heart of the mainland, they stumble upon a terrifying discovery: the virus hasn’t only mutated the infected but also spread to the uninfected, seemingly twisting and corrupting other surviving humans. This poses a threat unlike anything seen before, raising the stakes to an unimaginable level.

The Bone Temple Teases Even More Horrors

In 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the sequel will continue this chilling narrative. Ralph Fiennes (pictured), who stars as Dr. Kelson, has teased the next chapter.

Obviously, I can’t give too much away. I can say that the themes that we touched on in the scene on the train, the moment of labor, the humanity—it is a critical moment in the life of a mother and child. The ultimate human moment is an infected woman who is giving birth to a baby who is not infected.

The theme of innate humanity—is it still alive in the soul, in the heart, in the mind of an infected person? Are they completely corrupted? Are they only rabid? Or is there the possibility of something? Something human, it’s still there. We carry in us the potential for terrible destruction and pain. That theme is picked up very strongly in the next film.

Fiennes is not the only one returning for the next installment; Cillian Murphy (Jim), Alfie Williams (Spike), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Jamie), and Jack O’Connell (Sir Jimmy Crystal) return. Emma Laird (Jimmima), Erin Kellyman (Jimmy Ink), and Chi Lewis-Parry (Samson) are also back. Nia DeCosta will direct.

28 Years Later is the first installment of a planned trilogy, setting the stage for even more terrifying chapters. Watch it in theaters now. Get ready to experience the new wave of rage when 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple arrives in theaters in January 2026!
