Big news for horror fans and gamers! While director Zach Cregger’s (Barbarian) new movie hits theaters this August, his next project is taking us back to Raccoon City for the next installment in the Resident Evil franchise.
A Fan’s Vision: Authentic Experience Over Strict Lore
Cregger’s Resident Evil is said to “take the title back to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games. However, the filmmaker doesn’t intend to be a slave to the franchise’s massive lore.
“I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan. I’ve played them all. I don’t know how many times I’ve just looped [RE4] again and again. I just love it,” Cregger told SFX Magazine in their latest issue. “I’m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games; I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.”
He continues, “I don’t think I’m breaking any major rules, but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online. So all I want to do is just make a really good movie and tell a story that’s compelling. I know that I’m gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too.”
“I will also say, I’ve never seen a movie like it. It doesn’t jump around like Weapons and Barbarian, but it is still unto itself.” He said.
Back to the Big Screen
After seven live-action movies and a short-lived Netflix series, Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are bringing Resident Evil back to the big screen. Cregger will be writing and directing the film, which already has a September 18, 2026, premiere date. You will have to wait a while to see Resident Evil. However, you don’t have to wait long to see Cregger’s latest horror film, Weapons, which looks creepy as hell.
In Weapons, the horrors begin when “all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at the same time, leaving a community questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.”
Cregger has assembled an impressive cast for Weapons. It includes Josh Brolin (Dune 2), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear), Benedict Wong (3 Body Problem), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives).
Weapons opens in theaters and IMAX nationwide on August 8, 2025.
