Get ready, horror fans, because it’s beginning to look like a Nosferatu reunion for director Robert Eggers’ next chilling project! Earlier this week, we reported that Aaron Taylor-Johnson will star, and Lily-Rose Depp has also joined the cast.
Now, according to Deadline, Willem Dafoe, a frequent collaborator of Eggers, is in talks to star in Werwulf. Defoe also starred in Eggers’ Nosferatu and The Lighthouse.
Eggers will direct from the script he co-wrote with frequent collaborator Sjón. Sjón previously collaborated with Eggers on The Northman. Nosferatu’s Chris Columbus will return to produce.
The Darkest Thing Eggers Has Ever Written?
While the plot is still being kept under wraps, Werwulf is reportedly set in the 13th century. It will feature dialogue in Old English—a signature touch for Eggers’ historically immersive films. However, Eggers has shared one detail that caught our attention. He has stated that the film is “…the darkest thing I’ve ever written.”
If you’re a fan of his work, this is a chilling thought! After all, he has delivered Nosferatu, The Northman, The Lighthouse, and The Witch. Each film is filled with its unique brand of darkness and dread. It’s exactly what the brilliant director is known for, pushing boundaries and exploring the unsettling corners of history and human nature.
A Familiar (and Terrifying) Cast
The reunion with actors from his previous films, particularly Nosferatu, suggests a strong creative bond and a shared understanding of Eggers’ unique vision. The potential addition of Willem Dafoe, known for his intense and captivating performances in Eggers’ previous works, only heightens the anticipation.
On another note, Defoe is also in talks to star as Ebenezer Scrooge in Eggers’ upcoming adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens tale A Christmas Carol.
Hopefully, more details will be released by Eggers soon for Werwulf. In the meantime, you can explore his previous works by watching Nosferatu on Prime Video, along with The Witch and The Lighthouse. You can watch The Northman now on Peacock. Get ready for what promises to be Robert Eggers’ most intense and terrifying film yet!
