Prepare to have your sanity scratched! Slaterverse Pictures and Black Fawn Films have just released their highly anticipated horror film, The Undertone. This movie looks set to mess with your mind and your ears, promising a truly unique and terrifying experience!

A Star-Studded Cast & A World Premiere!

The Undertone boasts a fantastic cast that’s sure to draw you in. We’ve got Nina Kiri from “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Michèle Duquet from The Virgin Suicides, and Goosebumps.  Kris Holden-Ried from “The Umbrella Academy” also stars. This trio is ready to bring the scares!

The release of this bone-chilling new film follows its upcoming, already sold-out, World Premiere at the prestigious Fantasia International Film Festival on July 27th in Montreal, Canada. Talk about making a grand entrance!

When Podcasts Go Paranormal…

Produced by Dan Slater (Slaterverse) and Cody Calahan (Black Fawn Films), The Undertone follows a fascinating and creepy premise. Our protagonist hosts an ‘all-things-creepy’ podcast. Her life takes a dark turn when she moves into her dying mother’s house to become her primary caregiver. As if that wasn’t stressful enough, her podcast then receives 10 strange audio recordings from a young, pregnant couple who are experiencing increasingly terrifying paranormal noises.

As she plays these unsettling recordings, a chilling realization dawns on her: the woman’s story in the audio mirrors her own life in disturbing ways. Each new recording scratches deeper at her sanity, drawing her into a sinister fate she cannot escape. It sounds like a perfect blend of psychological horror and found-footage-esque audio terror!

A Deeply Personal Horror Story

The Undertone marks the feature film debut of talented writer/director Ian Tuason. This project is very close to his heart.

Star Nina Kiri explains the film’s power: “I think what makes this movie powerful, beyond its elements of horror, is the deep and vulnerable place it came from. It takes a lot of courage to write something based on a painful and terrifying experience. Ian’s openness, combined with the entire crew’s receptivity, created not only an amazing experience for me, but also an important and compelling story.”

Tuason himself shared the profound inspiration behind the film: “This film was born from the grief and love I carried for my mom in her final days. To return home to Montreal, where I was born, and world premiere this film for Fantasia audiences – it feels like things have come full circle in the most magical way.”

Dan Slater and Cody Calahan produced the film. Executive producers include Chad Archibald, Daril Fannin, Brit MacRae, Anthony Eu, Douglas Lee, Al Akdari, Charles Bern, Matthew Sterling, David Sproat, and Ian Tuason. This production marks a first-time collaboration between Black Fawn Films, Slaterverse, and Kino Studio, promising a fresh and exciting creative vibe.

With its compelling premise, talented cast, and dark origins, The Undertone is definitely one to keep on your radar for a genuinely unsettling experience! Looking for more festival news? We’ve got you covered. Visit our Film Festival Category for news, reviews, and more.
