Big news for fans of both horror and video games! Director Zach Cregger, the mastermind behind the film Weapons, is reuniting with one of his stars, Austin Abrams, for an all-new big-screen take on Resident Evil.
This new film, from Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions, aims to return to the franchise’s horror roots. It will be more faithful to the original games. Cregger is both writing and directing. He’s already said that he won’t be a slave to all the massive lore of the series. After seven live-action movies and a short-lived Netflix show, it’s exciting to hear the franchise is getting a fresh, horror-focused installment!
“I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan. I’ve played them all. I don’t know how many times I’ve just looped [RE4] again and again. I just love it,” Cregger told SFX Magazine in their latest issue. “I’m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games; I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.”
He continues, “I don’t think I’m breaking any major rules, but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online. So all I want to do is just make a really good movie and tell a story that’s compelling. I know that I’m gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too.”
“I will also say, I’ve never seen a movie like it. It doesn’t jump around like Weapons and Barbarian, but it is still unto itself.” He said.
But First… Weapons!
While we wait for the new Resident Evil, we’ll get to see Cregger and Abrams’ latest collaboration, Weapons. The plot for this one is seriously creepy: all but one child from the same class mysteriously disappears on the same night. The community is left completely baffled, with everyone questioning what—or who—is behind it.
Weapons, which is getting a ton of love from horror fans, also stars Josh Brolin (Dune 2), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear), Benedict Wong (3 Body Problem), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives).
The Resident Evil Legacy
Cregger will write and direct the film, which already has a premiere date of September 18, 2026. Watch Weapons now in theaters. Get your tickets here.
