Brad (Brian Krainson, who also directed and filled many other roles on the production end of things) and his flock o’ friends… who’s ranks include comely ladies Cassie (Jennifer Barlow), Sarah (Violet SinClair), and Lizzie (Téa Marie Karlsson), along with bearded every-bro David (Brody Wellmaker) and Brad’s younger brother, Parker (Parker Denning)… decide to head to a remote, yet rather fancy, cabin in the woods for some summertime assing-around… which is like other assing-around, except in the summer.
Because seemingly every remote cabin has a terror tale to tell, this piece of property was home to a witch hanging back in ye olden daze… and wouldn’t you just know it, the spirits of the past refuse to remain there… which makes this vacay a true fucking pain in the ass for our friends.
I’m going to be honest right of the beastly bat with you cats n’ creeps, I wasn’t sure if I was up for another low budget Evil Dead homage… mostly because the Evil Dead films actually exist and are fuckin’ Grade-A, rad-ass awesome… but Fear Cabin: The Last Weekend of Summer is a fun fright flick with it’s influences displayed prominently on it’s sleeve.
The cast seem to have actual chemistry, and none of the characters will make you want to punch them in the face, so that’s a huge plus… seriously though, these folks are a likable bunch… and while we are talking about actors, there are some really impressive wire-work shots, and as you (probably don’t) know, I’m something of a low budget filmmaker myself, so I have to applaud everyone involved in the execution of these stunts (not to mention director Krainson throwing himself down a flight of stairs)… absolutely awesome commitment that translates to on-screen tension!
The Witch of the piece was great as well… and the athletic performance of Bianca Medeiros Krainson has that wicked weirdo popping out of all sorts of unexpected directions, which adds immeasurably to the frightful fun… as do a number of creative camera set-ups.
Additionally/interestingly, Mallrats‘ Jeremy London shows up… I mean it isn’t like regular Jeremy London walking around… he’s playing a role and everything as the resident doomsayer with ties to the area’s history.
The bottom line here is that this is a fright flick for lovers of the same, and the comradery and passion of everyone involved really shows on screen… and is backed up by the film’s mid-credit outtake reel.
Extras on this Cleopatra DVD include a slideshow, trailer, a glimpse behind the scenes of Fear Cabin‘s production, and an interview with Krainson.
A solid “cabin in the woods” fright flick with fun wire-work and stunts, Fear Cabin:The Last Weekend of Summer is worth feasting your putrid peepers upon!
