Frankenstein is more than just a movie for del Toro; it’s a passion project, one he’s dreamed about since he was a child, according to statements he’s made over the years. And now he’s finally brought the story to life.
“This is, for me, the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life. I first read Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein as a kid and saw Boris Karloff in what became for me an almost religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system,” del Toro passionately stated.
He further elaborated on how the iconic story has influenced his entire career: “There are strands of Frankenstein throughout my films — Cronos, Blade, Hellboy, big time on Pinocchio, and a long, long et cetera. Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son, has consumed my thoughts again and again. I wanted to make this film before I even had a camera, and I’ve been actively pursuing it for over 25 years now. It has grown so close to me that now it’s a biography. And tonight, here, finally, we can share it with you.”
A Star-Studded Cast Brings the Classic to Life
Del Toro’s Frankenstein will follow the tragic tale of brilliant but egotistical scientist Victor Frankenstein, who, through a monstrous experiment, brings a creature to life. This act ultimately leads to the undoing of both the ambitious creator and his tragic creation.
The film boasts an incredible cast to embody these legendary roles. Oscar Isaac (Dune) stars as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) as Frankenstein’s monster. They are joined by Mia Goth (MaXXXine) and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds). Rounding out this stellar ensemble are Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front), Lars Mikkelsen (“Ahsoka”), David Bradley (Harry Potter), Christian Convery (“Sweet Tooth”), Ralph Ineson (The Witch), and Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”).
Coming Soon
Del Toro’s Frankenstein will be rated “R” for “bloody violence and grisly images.” The film is expected to premiere in theaters on October 17, followed by its release on Netflix on November 7.
