The world of ancient artifacts and high-stakes adventure is officially set to return. The live-action “Tomb Raider” series at Amazon Prime Video is moving forward, with production scheduled to begin on January 19, 2026.
The Next Lara Croft
Amazon has just confirmed that “Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner will lead the cast as the iconic badass adventurer, Lara Croft, Variety confirms. Before the series premieres, you can watch Turner in the psychological thriller Trust.
The series was first greenlit in May 2024, with rumors of Turner’s involvement being reported since November of that year. The show boasts a powerhouse creative team, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge serving as creator, writer, and executive producer. She is joined by Chad Hodge, who has boarded the project as co-showrunner, and Jonathan van Tulleken as director and executive producer.
Passing the Torch
Sophie Turner is stepping into big shoes, following in the footsteps of previous on-screen Laras, Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. Both actresses delivered powerhouse performances in the role, and Turner is aware of the legacy she’s inheriting.
In a statement, Turner expressed her excitement, saying, “I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character who means so much to so many—and I am giving everything I’ve got.” She also praised Waller-Bridge, adding that with Phoebe “at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands.”
Waller-Bridge echoed the sentiment, noting that it’s a rare opportunity to work on a show of this scale with a character she grew up loving. “Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is,” she said.
“Tomb Raider” is a collaboration between Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon MGM Studios. Get ready —Croft is coming.
