Hold onto your katanas, Demon Slayer fans! The highly anticipated movie, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, has killed it at the box office! The film debuted with an insane $70 million opening weekend, setting a brand-new record for the biggest anime film opening ever. It more than doubled the previous record of $31 million by Pokémon: The First Movie, Variety reports.
This isn’t just a domestic win. Infinity Castle is the first part of what’s expected to be a trilogy that will wrap up the series. It’s already earned over $300 million globally, with over $200 million of that coming from Japan, where it’s become the third-highest-grossing film of all time!
For Sony, this is a much-needed victory. The film, distributed by Sony’s Crunchyroll, gave the studio a massive hit after a pretty quiet summer.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle’s success follows in the footsteps of Netflix’s K-pop Demon Hunters, which also topped the box office when its sing-along version was released in theaters last month. It looks like anime is taking over the big screen, and we’re here for it!
