Prepare for the darkest chapter yet. The Conjuring universe is back with the chilling ninth installment, The Conjuring: Last Rites, the last film of the original franchise.
Helmed by director Michael Chaves and produced by James Wan, the film marks a return for the franchise’s core stars. Chaves has issued a warning to fans, describing the movie as “the darkest thing we’ve ever seen in the series,” guaranteeing a haunting experience.
Paranormal legends Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, face a dark evil in a desperate attempt to save the Smurl family.
The story centers on Janet and Jack Smurl and their children. Their excitement over moving into a duplex on Chase Street in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, in the 1970s quickly evaporates. Their new beginning became a violent nightmare. The Smurls claimed to be victims of terrifying supernatural activity. It ranged from ghostly apparitions and disembodied voices to chilling physical attacks. Moving beyond standard hauntings, the case involved possessed dolls (making Annabelle look like child’s play) and aggressive demonic forces. It is up to the Warrens to confront and stop the evil before it consumes the family.
Alongside the iconic pairing of Wilson and Farmiga, the film introduces a compelling cast to navigate the horror. Mia Tomlinson joins the ensemble as Judy Warren, Ed and Lorraine’s now-grown daughter, adding a new emotional layer to the famous family dynamic. The Smurl parents are played by Rebecca Calder (Janet Smurl) and Elliot Cowan (Jack Smurl). Playing their four daughters are Kíla Lord Cassidy, Tilly Walker, Beau Gadsdon, and Molly Cartwright.
Fans will soon be able to witness the terror in their own home. On October 7th, The Conjuring: Last Rites lands on digital, followed by its release on Blu-ray and DVD on November 25th.
