Daniel XIII; the result of an arcane ritual involving a King Diamond album, a box of Count Chocula, and a copy of Swank magazine, is a screenwriter, director, producer, actor, artist, and reviewer of fright flicks…Who hates ya baby?

Dumitor: a potential miracle drug that can recreate cells is all ready to undergo a little grey-area human testing on a few brave, desperate, volunteers.

One said volunteer is Jordan (Kazy Tauginas, who also wrote, produced, and directed the picture) who soon finds himself up to his asshole in a dire state of affairs as the drug trial results in one of the subjects having a wee bit of an adverse reaction which makes them an adrenaline-crazed violence machine.

Well, that shit spreads like beastly butter on terror toast and before long, the place is quarantined… and is kept locked tight by a violence prone security force absolutely hell-bent on keeping the entire fuckin’ mess hush-hush.

Meanwhile Jordan’s cousin, Tracy (Courtney Cavanagh), decides to investigate her relative’s vanishing act and films a documentary of her sleuthin’ ways… but can she blow the whistle on the case before she becomes a victim of the cover-up!

First thing first, Mirror Life Modern Zombies, isn’t a straight-up undead flesh muncher type of picture… rather this is a “modern” take on some of the ideas present in the zombie horror sub-genre… and that makes for a unique flick that’s as engaging as it is creative!

The “medical test resulting in violence prone maniacs” narrative is solid sci-fi/apocalyptic ghoulish goodness on it’s own, but when combined with the conspiracy theory documentary footage jazz, you get a flick that deftly changes narrative style while telling a cohesive, entertaining story… I found it both clever and refreshing… don’t worry long-time readers (which admittedly is mostly me), I’ll doubtless say “fuck” again for your reading pleasure before long…

Fuck, what else…

The cast assembled here are strong and provide convincing performances across the board, there’s a great sense of immersive-ness thanks to the real world locations utilized… the whole thing caught me by sinister surprise in a great way!

No segue, just straight into… extras assembled on this Cleopatra DVD include the film’s trailer, a slideshow, collections of deleted scenes and outtakes, and an audio commentary from Tauginas and supervising editor Aidan Kane that provides an engaging journey through the film’s production.

If you’ve been paying attention, you may have guessed that Mirror Life Modern Zombies, is well worth a wicked whirl in my not so humble opinion!
