Iconic Events Releasing, in partnership with Lionsgate, is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the acclaimed Japanese horror-thriller Battle Royale with a special limited series of screenings across North America this October.

This story is about a group of Japanese students forced by their government into a kill-or-be-killed scenario. It shocked audiences upon its release. And it continues to shape modern dystopian storytelling, inspiring countless films, television shows, and video games today.

A bonus interview with Battle Royale screenwriter Kenta Fukasaku, the son of the movie’s visionary director, Kinji Fukasaku, will also be featured.

Titled Kinji Fukasaku: A Master at Work, this documentary segment offers access to the history and unique directing approach that shaped the elder Fukasaku’s landmark final film. Kenta Fukasaku reveals the complex forces that inspired the movie. That includes how Kinji’s harrowing experience in a Japanese munitions factory during World War II informed the screenplay, and the influence of the 1970s protest movement on the film’s depiction of onscreen violence. Also, it delves into how a surge in Japanese youth crime at the time played a crucial role in creating the concept and characters. The exclusive interview offers essential context for one of the most provocative cinematic statements of the last quarter-century.

Fans will get to experience the raw, visceral power of the film in stunning quality. The 4K theatrical cut screenings will run on October 12th, October 13th, and October 15th. The film will be presented in its original Japanese with English subtitles.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see the defining dystopian cult classic on the big screen. For advance tickets, a list of participating theater locations, and screening times, please check the Iconic Events website.
