The infernal halls of Pandemonium are about to witness a vicious power struggle. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola joins forces with his brother, Todd Mignola (Hellboy: The Exorcist of Vorsk), for a hellacious new two-issue comic event: The Crown: A Tale of Hell. This project marks a creative reunion for the Mignola brothers and an unholy family reunion for their characters. And it’s all brought to gruesome life by the distinct, stylish visuals of artist Warwick Johnson-Cadwell (Our Encounters with Evil).

The Crown: A Tale of Hell stars Hellboy’s lesser-known (but equally dangerous) half-brothers, Gamon and Lusk. First introduced in Mignola’s 2012 series, Hellboy in Hell, the brothers are now the central players in a high-stakes bid for control of Pandemonium.

As Todd Mignola explains, the story unfolds during a single, pivotal day in the 16th-century life of Hellboy’s “Hell family.” “In the bowels of Castle Azzael, a crown is secretly being forged for a new king,” says Todd. “Palace intrigue and deceitful backstabbing ensue as Hellboy’s dad, uncle, and half-brothers all vie for the prize; for the chance to seize sleeping Satan’s throne.”

However, the siblings aren’t the only ones vying for the ultimate prize. The unexpected return of their mother intensifies the power struggle. She steps back into the demonic arena for the first time in a hundred years. And she has plans of her own for the crown.

For Mike Mignola, the collaboration felt like a natural extension of his work, even if the idea originated externally. “Todd came to me with the idea of writing something about Hellboy’s brothers,” Mike explains. “It never would have occurred to me to do more with those guys but it didn’t take much prodding. Brothers writing about brothers in a somewhat complicated family dynamic—once we got going it was almost too easy. And fun. And SO MUCH fun that I could only imagine it drawn by Warwick.”

Artist Warwick Johnson-Cadwell shares the excitement of stepping into such a legendary world. “I love where Todd and Mike are taking us with The Crown: A Tale Of Hell,” he says. “I’m so grateful to have worked with Mike on Mr. Higgins and the Encounters With Evil books, but this is a step into the Hellboy universe and the opportunity to draw some of those legendary characters. And more exciting still, to introduce someone altogether new.”

The Crown: A Tale of Hell #1 is slated for release on February 11, 2026, from Dark Horse Comics. The main covers for the two-issue event are by artist Warwick Johnson-Cadwell. The striking variant covers are available from Mike Mignola himself and Bruno Seelig.
