The wave of public domain horror continues. The team behind Screamboat, a murderous take on the classic Steamboat Willie character, has officially announced a sequelt. The original, which capitalized on the Disney precursor to Mickey Mouse entering the public domain in 2024, was released earlier this year.
Director Steven LaMorte confirmed the news.
“I’m thrilled to announce the sequel to our bloody horror comedy,” LaMorte said in a statement. “We had so much fun bringing these iconic characters to life with a bloody twist, and I look forward to returning to the world of Screamboat to create even more miniature murder and mayhem.” Variety quotes LaMorte as saying.
LaMorte first teased the announcement during his acceptance speech at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards on October 19 when Screamboat won the title of “Best Public Domain Resurrection.” The announcement underscores the audience demand for fresh, gruesome spins on beloved, newly available intellectual property.
The sequel promises to escalate the chaos. The sequel will continue following the cliffhanger ending of the first film. Filmmakers teased in their press release that the next chapter the arrival of another public-domain icon: Minnie,” confirming that the sequel will introduce a chilling love interest for Steamboat Willie set to join the chaos.
“Fans can expect the sequel to build on that legacy with even more outrageous set pieces and gruesome comedy,” the filmmakers assured, promising a bigger, bolder vision for the deadly mouse’s return.
The original film follows a group of unsuspecting New Yorkers on a late-night ferry ride. Their relaxing commute turns into a nightmare. A mischievous and murderous mouse begins to hunt them. The film’sfilm’sial synopsis asks the big question: “Can t” e ship’sship’sy crew of travelers find a way to stop a killer creature…?”
