There’s an underrated horror film that you need to see, and it tops my list of favorite chilling films ever: Skeleton Key. Like many films, it’s back for Halloween.
First released back in 2005, the film, directed by Iain Softley, centers on a hospice nurse, Caroline, played by Kate Hudson. After taking a caregiving job working at a remote New Orleans plantation home, she finds herself entangled in a mystery involving the house and the family’s dark past.
The cast alone (though there’s much more) is worth watching the movie for. Hudson, in what I believe is her best role, stars alongside Peter Sarsgaard (The Batman), Joy Bryant (Get Rich or Die Tryin’), Gena Rowlands (The Notebook), and John Hurt (Alien)
Skeleton Key features dark aspects of Hoodoo and greed. It builds intense tension, all while offering a truly unique story. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen it, but to this day it still leaves me on the edge of my seat and a knot in my stomach, a rare thing indeed.
If you haven’t seen this chilling film, stop what you are doing, turn off the lights, and watch it now on Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Peacock, Prime Video, or YouTube.
