Good news for everyone who loved the original, seriously creepy found-footage hit Grave Encounters! That 2011 cult classic, which followed a reality TV ghost hunting crew stumbling upon absolute terror in an abandoned mental hospital, is officially getting a reboot.
And guess what? The guys who started it all, Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz (who wrote and directed the original and wrote the sequel), are back to develop the new film.
Joining them are major horror players Justin Long, and his realife partner, Kate Bosworth, who are both producing the project and starring. Minihan, Ortiz, and original producer Shawn Angelski are also on board, bringing the whole team back together.
Long and Bosworth recently teamed up with Minihan on his new killer canine movie, Coyotes, and we loved the vibe.
“Our creative connection with Colin was undeniable on Coyotes and we wanted to continue that relationship as quickly as possible,” the duo said. “He is a very rare combination of brilliant filmmaker and fun collaborator.”
The plan is to honor the original film’s legacy while ratcheting up the terror. The new movie aims to “modernize the concept into a cinematic experience, heightening the dread, claustrophobia, and psychological terror that made the original a fan favorite.”
And the original creators couldn’t be happier with the casting.
“Justin has defined genre cinema for over a decade and is the definitive scream king,” said Minihan and Ortiz. “He’s the perfect choice to reimagine Grave Encounters for a new generation.”
With Long and Bosworth attached, you can expect the reboot to have a much larger budget than the original, which cost $120,000 to make and brought in $4.06 million at the box office. The sequel, Grave Encounters II, released in 2012, didn’t match the popularity of the first film. It had a higher budget —$1.4 million —but only grossed $1.55 million at the box office. Barely breaking even.
So, get ready to check back into the asylum! The Grave Encounters reboot is officially on the way! Rewatch the original now on Arrow, Amazon Prime, Fandango at Home, Roku, Pluto, and more. Here’s a look back at the original trailer.
