Released in 1980, The Shining is Stanley Kubrick’s acclaimed adaptation of Stephen King’s 1977 blockbuster horror novel. The film has long been solidified as one of the most chilling and visually inventive horror movies ever made.
The story centers on writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson). He takes a job as the winter caretaker for the remote Overlook Hotel. The job isolates him, his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and their young son Danny (Danny Lloyd). When a blizzard seals off the only road out, the hotel’s stored energy from past evil deeds begins to prey on Jack’s sanity, and he is transformed into a violent madman, trapping his family in a horrifying struggle for survival. The film is a haunting exploration of madness, memory, and generational violence.
The film’s distinct, unsettling look is due in large part to the collaboration between director Stanley Kubrick and famed cinematographer John Alcott. The innovative use of the Steadicam rig was pioneered during this production, allowing for the famously smooth, gliding shots through the hotel’s long, menacing corridors.
To commemorate the film’s 45th anniversary and its IMAX debut, the company has released an exclusive piece of fan merchandise: The Shining x IMAX Exclusive Art Print.
The print features the instantly recognizable typewriter imagery derived from the film, complete with the famous, repetitive phrase. IMAX designed the artwork. The artwork is presented as a “playful reminder that it’s okay to take a break every once in a while.” The art print is available exclusively through the official IMAX online merch store. It is offered in two sizes, the 12″ x18″ and the 24″ x36.”
