Stephen King’s literary works continue to inspire an array of film and television projects in Hollywood, with there have being 55 so far. For loyal fans, the development pipeline offers a constant stream of King anticipations. From long-awaited epics to new twists on iconic horrors, here is a project-by-project breakdown of every upcoming King adaptation currently in development.

Carrie (TV Show)

Carrie is the first TV series adaptation of King’s debut novel (1974), which tells the story of Carrie White, a bullied high school student who discovers she possesses devastating telekinetic powers. This marks the fourth King adaptation for creator Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep). The show recently completed filming in October 2025 and is anticipated to drop on Amazon Prime Video sometime in 2026.

The Dark Tower (TV Show)

Widely considered King’s magnum opus, The Dark Tower series of novels blends elements of fantasy, western, horror, and science fiction. Following the troubled 2017 film adaptation, acclaimed King adaptor Mike Flanagan acquired the rights in December 2022. The plan is to develop a multi-season television series that can adequately capture the scope and depth of the saga, which centers on the Gunslinger, Roland Deschain.

The Talisman (TV Show)

A collaborative novel by King and Peter Straub (1984), The Talisman is a fantasy story about a 12-year-old boy who embarks on an epic journey across parallel worlds to find a mystical object that can save his dying mother. Though long considered difficult to adapt due to its complexity, it was reported in 2021 that Amblin Entertainment would develop it as a Netflix show, with The Duffer Brothers (of Stranger Things fame) attached as producers. However, significant updates have been minimal since then.

Fairy Tale (TV Show)

Based on King’s 2022 novel Fairy Tale, the story centers on a high school student who discovers a hidden world and travels to an alternate dimension to save his beloved dog. Though initially planned as a film by director Paul Greengrass, the project shifted into a 10-episode series format in 2024, with showrunner J.H. Wyman taking the lead. This pivot suggests the creators felt the fantasy/adventure narrative needed the expanded canvas of a television series.

The Stand (Movie)

King’s 1978 novel is a massive post-apocalyptic epic about the aftermath of a deadly virus. The remaining survivors band into opposing factions representing good and evil. While it has been adapted as a limited series previously, a new feature film adaptation for Paramount Pictures was reported in June 2025, with Doug Liman set to direct. Turning the immense scope and numerous characters of The Stand into a single movie is viewed as a highly ambitious challenge.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon (Movie)

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon was published in 1999. This psychological horror tale follows a 9-year-old girl who gets lost in the woods while hiking and embarks on a surreal journey in which her favorite baseball player, Tom Gordon, becomes a symbol of hope and guidance. Lionsgate acquired the rights in July 2025 and brought on JT Mollner to both write and direct the feature film. Mollner is already familiar with King’s work, having written the acclaimed 2025 adaptation of The Long Walk.

Billy Summers (Movie)

King’s 2021 novel, Billy Summers, follows a professional assassin. He only kills “bad guys” and is seeking to retire after one final, seemingly perfect job that inevitably goes wrong. Initially reported as a 10-episode limited series, the project was redeveloped into a feature film after Warner Bros. acquired it. The film is set to be produced by J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. Production updates have been under wraps since the announcement.

Mister Yummy (Movie)

This project adapts a short horror story from King’s 2015 collection, The Bazaar of Bad Dreams. It involves a depressed man who encounters a wish-fulfilling creature hiding in his apartment. Mister Yummy is currently in the very early stages of development, with Intrinsic Value Films set to begin sales at the American Film Market in November 2025, based on a screenplay by Troy Blake.

Cujo (Movie)

The terrifying story of Cujo sees a mother and son trapped in their car by a rabid Saint Bernard. It was adapted from a 1981 novel and quickly became a 1983 film. Word emerged in March 2025 that Netflix, with producer Roy Lee, is developing a new movie. Reports specify this is a remake of the previous film adaptation rather than a new take on the original novel.

If you’re a Stephen King fan, there’s plenty of upcoming adaptation to be excited for. However, there were also many released in 2025 that you might have missed. We recommend watching the movies The Monkey and The Running Man. If you’re looking for a series, “It: Welcome to Derry” and “The Institute” are a must see.
