Look, the 1990s weren’t just about grunge and dial-up—they brought us so many great horror films! We got instant classics like The Sixth Sense, and let’s not forget the franchise starters like Scream. With Hollywood in full-on reboot mode, it’s no surprise they’re digging up the best films from that decade. And guess what? Now they are coming for The Faculty.
Directed by Robert Rodriguez and penned by the master of meta-horror himself, Scream writer Kevin Williamson, this movie is a perfect blend of teen angst and gooey creature feature thrills. The premise is peak ’90s genius: In a high school in a rural Ohio town, six students realize that parasites from outer space have taken over their teachers and classmates. Time to band together, fight back, and try not to fail Biology while you’re at it!
That Iconic Ensemble Cast
Part of the reason The Faculty has such a huge cult following is its truly stacked ensemble cast. It features up-and-comers who were about to blow up: Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Josh Hartnett, Shawn Hatosy, Usher Raymond, Elijah Wood, and even Usher! That lineup alone is enough to earn legendary status, but the film earned its place among the best ’90s horror flicks because it’s genuinely great.
It successfully nails the mash-up. It takes the sharp, self-aware teen-horror vibe Williamson perfected in Scream. Then, it slams us headfirst into classic alien-invasion and creature-feature tropes. Best of all, it fully embraces its B-movie roots, delivering a fun, campy experience that never skimps on the thrills, scares, and homage-heavy gross-outs.
The Reboot Buzz Is Real!
The Faculty never got the sequel it deserved back in the day, but its massive cult following definitely convinced Hollywood that it’s time to revisit the concept.
Back in February, Miramax announced it was developing a remake of the 1998 sci-fi horror. The good news? Original director Robert Rodriguez is attached as a producer to the new project, with Drew Hancock writing the script. Even better, it’s being produced by BoulderLight, the company behind modern horror hits like Barbarian and Weapons. So far, there have been no casting announcements or plot details. But we’re keeping an eye out.
In the meantime, you can dive back into the original—or experience it for the first time. It’s now available on Tubi. It joined the free streaming lineup on December 1st, alongside other great horror titles like Oculus and James Gunn’s Slither. They even added some more recent releases like the 2019 Pet Sematary and the super-dark 2022 film The Menu!
