Letterboxd, the world’s favorite film discovery platform and social network, is leveling up massively by launching its own online film-rental service: The Letterboxd Video Store!

This isn’t just about adding more movies; the company—which boasts over 24 million global members—calls the Video Store “the next evolution of the platform’s core mission of film discovery.” It’s literally letting the community dictate what films get made available.

Launch Details: Date, Availability, and the Price Tag

The Video Store goes live on Wednesday, December 10th, in 23 countries worldwide. That includes the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and much of Europe.

  • Pricing: Films will be priced according to standard digital rental rates (transactional VOD) in each country. In the U.S., launch titles will cost between $3.99 and $19.99 to rent.
  • Rental Window: Just like other major services, you get 48 hours to finish watching the film once you press play.
  • How to Watch: You can stream your rentals on the web and mobile devices (iOS and Android), or cast directly to your connected TV via Apple TV 4K, Apple AirPlay, and Google Chromecast.

Curation Driven By Your Obsessions

The most exciting part? The Video Store won’t just dump a giant catalog on you. Instead, it will feature curated “shelves” programmed directly by the Letterboxd team. They are using the site’s own data—millions of users’ watchlists, reviews, and behavioral signals—to inform their picks.

CEO and co-founder, Matthew Buchanan, explained that they’re harnessing member demand to get films to the people who want them most.

The two initial collections launching are:

  • Unreleased Gems: Featuring highly demanded films that haven’t been released in specific countries, where the store is making them available.
  • Lost & Found: Celebrating “underseen underdogs”—films that the community loves but are hard to find.

The Initial Lineup is INSANE

At launch, the store will feature nine films, including several exclusives, spanning nine countries. This includes deep-cut treasures that have been practically impossible to stream, such as Todd Haynes’ controversial 1991 sci-fi horror debut, Poison. It will also feature the Indian neo-noir thriller Kennedy, which hasn’t been seen since its 2023 Cannes Film Festival debut.

New films are slated to drop regularly! This exciting news came to us via Variety. Grab a bag of popcorn, get comfy, and get ready to update those watchlists this December!
