Prepare to witness the ultimate spiritual showdown! One of the most controversial movies of the year, The Carpenter’s Son, is finally making its way to your living room.

This isn’t your typical Sunday school story. Starring the legendary Nicolas Cage, FKA Twigs, and Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place), this flick is a gritty, “religious horror.” It takes on the early life of a family you think you know.

The Story: A Holy War in the Desert

Set in a remote village in Roman-era Egypt, we follow a carpenter (Cage), his wife (FKA Twigs), and their teenage son Jesus (Noah Jupe). They’ve spent years hiding from a dark threat, but their lives are upended when they roll into a small settlement.

Things get weird—fast. A mysterious stranger (Isla Johnston) starts tempting young Jesus to rebel against his father’s strict rules. As the boy gets lured into a forbidden world, Joseph realizes with absolute horror that they aren’t just dealing with a rebellious teen. They’re facing a demonic power that’s here to destroy them.

Why the Controversy?

Director Lotfy Nathan drew inspiration from the Infancy Gospel of Thomas. It is an ancient “apocryphal” text that didn’t make it into the Bible. It shows a much more human, flawed, and even dangerous version of a young Jesus. A time when he is struggling with powers he doesn’t yet understand. Toss in some violent, unnatural events and nightmarish visions of the future, and you’ve got a recipe for a film that has people very divided!

A Powerhouse Creative Team

Nathan (the mastermind behind Harka) brings his Coptic Christian background to the project, delivering imagery that is as divine as it is terrifying.
