We’ve got some bittersweet news for fans of HBO’s post-apocalyptic hit. While “The Last of Us” is moving full steam ahead into Season 3, one familiar face won’t be making the trip. Variety and Deadline have confirmed that Danny Ramirez is officially exiting the series, and his role as Manny Alvarez will be recast.
Why the Change?
It’s not creative differences—it’s just a packed schedule! Ramirez has been incredibly busy lately, especially in the MCU. Between stepping into the Falcon mantle for Captain America: Brave New World and preparing for the massive Avengers: Doomsday (and potentially Secret Wars), he couldn’t align his filming dates.
Who is Manny? (And Why He Matters for Season 3)
If you watched Season 2, you know Manny as the loyal, sunshiny soldier who fought alongside Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). He’s a former Firefly with a heart of gold but a fierce streak of protection for his friends. In season two, Manny appeared in four episodes, helping Abby on her quest for vengeance.
This recasting is significant because Season 3 is expected to shift the focus to Abby’s perspective. This means Manny is set to receive more screen time and to feature some of the most intense action sequences so far.
More Behind-the-Scenes Shuffles
Ramirez isn’t the only one stepping back. Neil Druckmann, the creator of the original games and co-showrunner of the series, is also transitioning away from his day-to-day writing and directing duties for Season 3. Druckmann is heading back to Naughty Dog to focus on their next big game (rumored to be Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet), leaving the brilliant Craig Mazin to steer the ship as the sole showrunner.
What’s Next for Danny Ramirez?
Don’t worry, you’ll still be seeing plenty of him! You can see Ramierz next in the MCU. He’s playing Joaquin Torres/Falcon in Captain America: Brave New World and Avengers: Doomsday.
“The Last of Us” Season three is expected to start filming in March 2026. Stay tuned for more season three news.
