Ryan Coogler’s vampire epic Sinners walked away with two awards at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, which took place just last night (January 11, 2026).
While the film led the pack with seven nominations, seven to be exact, it was a bit of a bittersweet night for fans as the movie was shut out of the major “Big Five” categories like Best Drama and Best Actor.
The Wins for Sinners:
-
Best Original Score: Ludwig Göransson took home the trophy for his haunting, atmospheric music. Interestingly, this award wasn’t shown during the live telecast (it was cut for time), which sparked significant “Best Podcast” vs. “Best Score” drama on social media.
-
Cinematic and Box Office Achievement: This is the Globes’ relatively new award for blockbusters. Sinners beat out heavy hitters like Avatar: Fire and Ash and Wicked: For Good because of its massive success as an original R-rated horror film.
While it may not have gotten the reception it deserved at the Golden Globes, the award season is just beginning. The Oscars and Academy Awards are still heading your way. Don’t be surprised if you hear “the award goes to Sinners” in the near future.
-
January 22, 2026: Oscar Nominations Announcement. This is the big one—we’ll see if the Academy gives Michael B. Jordan the nod the Globes skipped.
-
February 22, 2026: BAFTA Film Awards. The British equivalent of the Oscars often sets the tone for the final winners.
-
March 1, 2026: Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. This is where the actors vote for themselves, making it a huge indicator for the Oscar acting races.
-
March 15, 2026: The 98th Academy Awards (The Oscars). The grand finale of the season!
Just in case you’ve been living under a rock somewhere, let me fill you in.
Michael B. Jordan takes on the challenging task of portraying dual roles in Sinners. The story centers on twin brothers, played by Jordan, who seek to escape their troubled pasts by returning to their hometown. However, their hopes for a new beginning are quickly shattered when they discover that a far greater evil awaits them, eager to welcome them back into its fold.
A Massive Hit
Beyond its critical reception, Sinners has also made cinematic history! With $275.7 million in domestic gross, it has officially surpassed Jaws ($273.66 million) to become the second-highest-grossing horror film ever domestically, trailing only It (2017), which grossed $328.8 million. However, since IT is a remake of a well-known IP, Sinners now proudly holds the top spot as the highest-grossing original horror film ever in the U.S.!
A Stellar Cast and Dream Team Crew
Joining Michael B. Jordan in this chilling endeavor is a stellar cast, including Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Jack O’Connell (Ferrari), Wunmi Mosaku (Passenger), and Jayme Lawson (The Woman King). Omar Benson Miller (True Lies) and Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods) co-star, rounding out an impressive ensemble.
Coogler has assembled a dream team of exceptional behind-the-camera talent, many of whom he collaborated with on the Black Panther franchise. This includes director of photography Autumn Durald Arkapaw, Oscar-winning production designer Hannah Beachler, editor Michael P. Shawver, Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, and Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter.
Watch at Home
So when is it coming home? Pop some popcorn, turn down the lights, and get ready for Sinners, which I called “Bloody Brilliant” in my spoiler-free review, because it’s out now. You can watch Sinners on MAX or get your Blu-ray or 4K copy.
