If you’re looking for a psychological thriller to kick off the new year, you might want to keep an eye out for the dark thriller Like Father Like Son, hitting theaters and digital platforms this January.
Forget the “nature vs. nurture” debate—this movie dives headfirst into the “is my dad’s craziness genetic?” territory. Here’s the breakdown of what to expect.
Some Killers are Made, Some Were Born to Kill
The story takes us back to the summer of 1990 in Richmond, California. We follow Eli McKinnon (Dylan Flashner), a young guy who’s had a bit of a rough upbringing—specifically, he watched his father, Gabe (Dermot Mulroney), commit a murder.
Fast forward a bit: Gabe is rotting on death row, but Eli is starting to feel some… familiar urges. To cope with his family’s brutal legacy, Eli starts moonlighting as a vigilante, justifying his own descent into crime by targeting people he thinks actually deserve it. It’s a “breaking the cycle” story, but with a lot more tension and moral gray areas.
The Cast
The movie features some recognizable faces: Dylan Flashner as the struggling Eli and Dermot Mulroney as the murderous father figure. Ariel Winter (“Modern Family!”) as Hayley. The cast also includes Vivica A. Fox and Mayim Bialik.
How to Watch
You won’t have to wait long to see if Eli can escape his DNA in Like Father Like Son. It’s getting a limited theatrical release on January 31. Still, if you’d rather stay on your couch (we don’t blame you), it’ll be available for digital rental or purchase the same day on Amazon Video and iTunes. Check out the trailer below.
