If you’ve ever played The Mortuary Assistant with the lights off, you know exactly how terrifying a night shift at River Fields can be. Well, it’s time to clock in for real. Epic Pictures and Dread have officially announced that the live-action adaptation of the viral horror hit is coming to the big screen!

Don’t Let the Bodies Breathe

Willa Holland (Arrow) stars as Rebecca Owens, a newly certified mortician who thinks she’s just putting in some overtime. Working the night shift alone, she begins to realize the “residents” of the mortuary aren’t staying still.

As the night spirals into a demonic nightmare, Rebecca has to balance the grisly reality of her job—embalming bodies—with the supernatural horror of a demonic possession. She’ll have to uncover the dark secrets of her mysterious mentor, played by Paul Sparks (Boardwalk Empire), and face her own past traumas before she becomes the next vessel for something ancient and evil.

Why Fans Are Hyped

This isn’t just a “based on” cash-grab. The film was co-written by the game’s creator, Brian Clarke, and the production team actually built a full-scale, practical River Fields Mortuary set to keep that claustrophobic, “dirty” realism from the game. While the game kept us on our toes with puzzles and hauntings, the movie promises to dive way deeper into the mythology of the demonic entities plaguing the town.

Producer Patrick Ewald is promising a “relentlessly immersive” experience that bridges the gap between the gaming and film communities. Whether you’ve finished every ending in the game or you’re totally new to the lore, this looks like the kind of horror movie that will make you never want to work late again.

The Mortuary Assistant hits theaters nationwide on February 13, 2026 (the ultimate Friday the 13th treat), followed by an exclusive streaming premiere on Shudder on March 27, 2026. Before you watch the new trailer, you might want to turn on the lights and lock your door. It’s intense.
