The power of Mike Flanagan compels you—to wait just a little bit longer. Universal and Blumhouse have officially scheduled an exorcism for the spring of 2027. Mike Flanagan’s highly anticipated take on The Exorcist now possesses a new release date, March 12, 2027, Variety reports.
The film was initially eyeing a 2026 release. It has, however, been pushed back to give Flanagan enough breathing room to finish his upcoming “Carrie” series.
A Powerhouse Duo
Leading the “radical new take” on this legendary franchise are two incredible actors: Scarlett Johansson and Jacobi Jupe. Reportedly, Johansson will play a small-town detective who gets caught up in a case that defies logic. Fresh off his breakout role in Hamnet, Jupe (younger brother of A Quiet Place star Noah Jupe) is joining the cast. Given his recent acclaim, he’s the perfect choice for what is sure to be an intense, emotional role.
Why This Isn’t Just “Another Sequel”
After the mixed reception of 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, Universal and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster decided to pivot. They’ve given Flanagan—the director behind “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Midnight Mass,” and Doctor Sleep—total creative freedom to craft a standalone story set within the Exorcist universe.
This isn’t a remake or a direct continuation. Described as a “visceral” and “fresh” entry, it will honor the 1973 original while forging its own terrifying path.
Behind the Scenes
Mike Flanagan is writing, directing, and producing via his Red Room Pictures banner. This marks the fourth time Flanagan has teamed up with Jason Blum and Blumhouse (Oculus, Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil). Filming will begin in February 2026, giving the team a whole year to perfect the scares. With Flanagan at the helm, expectations are through the roof. Flanagan has proven time and again that he can balance deep emotional trauma with bone-chilling supernatural horror.
