If you thought your family drama was bad, wait until you meet the Laye siblings in The Calling Witch.

From the twisted mind of screenwriter Chris Retts, this film—initially titled simply The Calling—has officially completed its successful 2025 festival run. After being picked up by Vantage Media, it is now haunting your favorite digital platforms, including later this month.

The Plot: Fiction Becomes Fatal

The story follows Virginia (Danika Golombek) and her little brother Edward (Grayson Eddey), who are dealing with the aftermath of their mother Meredith’s tragic suicide. Their mom was a prolific author of dark, unsettling novels, but her most terrifying creation wasn’t just on the page.

Shortly after Virginia moves back home to help care for Edward, things go from “grief-stricken” to “downright demonic.” It starts with a break-in at their mother’s writing shed. Then, things get grisly fast—like, “finding-your-cat-inside-a-statue” levels of messed up. The siblings realize they are being hunted by The Calling Witch, a child-devouring entity straight out of their mother’s final book. They have to figure out the dark link between their family secrets and this literary monster before they become the next chapter in her story.

The Creative Team

Director Mark Wilson (Wade in the Water) reunites with writer Chris Retts to deliver what critics are calling a sophisticated, subverted take on the “home invasion” genre.

The cast includes Danika Golombek (7 Witches), Grayson Eddey (City on a Hill), Marcus DeAnda (Better Call Saul), and Hilary Barraford (Go for Sisters).

Why You Should Watch

The Calling Witch is an atmospheric “slow-burn” that explores how trauma can literally manifest into a monster. If you enjoyed the claustrophobic dread of The Strangers or the folklore horror of The Witch, this film will be right up your alley. So, put on your comfy pants, grab a snack, and watch The Calling Witch on January 20, 2026. You will be able to watch it on Amazon Prime, Fandango at Home (Vudu), DirecTV, and Vubiquity.
