Mike Flanagan is assembling a massive cast for his take on The Exorcist that is so stacked, it might actually be able to scare the devil himself. Hot on the heels of the news that Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years an enslaved person) has joined the project, we’ve got another massive update: Laurence Fishburne is officially checking in. Yes, Morpheus is entering the Exorcist universe, and the hype level just went from ‘cautiously optimistic ‘ to ‘full-blown obsession’.
A Dream Team
Universal and Blumhouse are clearly playing for keeps with this one. It’s not just looking for the “horror actors”—he’s gathering an ensemble of dramatic heavyweights to ground this radical new take.”
Fishburne and Ejiofor join Scarlett Johansson, Diane Lane, and Jacob Elordi, Johansson’s son. Fishburne has an impressive resume, appearing in films like The Matrix franchise, Contagion, and The Astronaut, to name a few.
A Radical New Vision (No, you’re)
If you’re worried about another standard sequel, take a deep breath. This is NOT a sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer. Instead, the man behind The Haunting of Hill House is crafting an all-new story set within that universe.
Flanagan is serving as writer, director, and producer, and he’s been vocal about his goals. He wants it to be the “scariest movie he’s ever made. How? By focusing on characters that feel real and relevant, rather than just leaning on 50-year-old nostalgia.
Production Notes & Key Dates
The film is set to shoot on location in the eerie, atmospheric streets of New York City. We have a bit of a wait, but Flanagan’s Exorcist will hit theaters on Friday, March 12, 2027.
Flanagan brings Ejiofor back into the fold, suggesting their chemistry on The Life of Chuck was something special. With the backing of Jason Blum (Blumhouse) and James Wan (Atomic Monster), this project has the potential to be the most terrifying entry in the franchise since the 1973 original.
