The “Brenaissance” has reached its peak. In what is easily the most electrifying movie news to surface lately, Universal Pictures has officially confirmed that Academy Award winners Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reuniting for a fourth installment of the legendary Mummy franchise. So, dust off your fedoras and sharpen your khopeshes: the adventure begins in theaters on May 19, 2028.

A Legendary Reunion

While rumors have been swirling since last fall, deals are finally closed. Fraser and Weisz will reprise their iconic roles as the wisecracking adventurer Rick O’Connell and the brilliant Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell.

This news is particularly massive for long-time fans. While Fraser led the third film in 2008, Weisz did not return for that outing. The duo is back together for the first time since 2001’s The Mummy Returns. And it is the cinematic homecoming fans have been dreaming of for over two decades.

Fraser and Weisz aren’t the only ones returning; franchise veteran Sean Daniel, who has produced every Mummy film since 1999, returns to steer the ship alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment. In addition to starring, Brendan Fraser will serve as an Executive Producer, so you know it’s in good hands.

Written by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill), you can expect a script that can balance legacy charm with genuine thrills.

Under Wraps (Literally)

While the plot is being kept strictly—and ironically—under wraps, the creative team suggests a fresh, energetic direction for the $1.8 billion franchise. The film will be helmed by the duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (collectively known as Radio Silence). Coming off the success of Ready or Not and its sequel, Ready or Not: Here I Come, they are known for blending high-stakes action with sharp, modern wit.

Double the Mummies, Double the Terror

If one Mummy movie wasn’t enough, Universal is doubling down on the ancient Egyptian lore. Alongside this blockbuster sequel, the studio is also developing a separate, darker, horror-centric The Mummy film from a different director, Lee Cronin. And its first trailer is terror-inducing. This standalone project aims to lean into theO’Connells’ roots of the supernatural creature, offering a grittier alternative to the O’Connells’ globe-trotting adventures.
