During Thursday’s State of Play, PlayStation and Santa Monica Studio officially kicked off the 20th-anniversary celebrations for God of War. Not only is a series adaptation of the original trilogy officially in development, but a brand-new spin-off game, God of War: Sons of Sparta, has just dropped on PS5.

A Legendary Return

TC Carson, the iconic voice of Kratos in the original Greek era, delivered the announcement. In a heartfelt blog post, Santa Monica Studio reflected on thefranchise’ss legacy:

“As we approach the final month of God of War’s 20th anniversary year in March 2026, we couldn’t let this milestone close without giving fans one last big surprise! We’re thrilled to confirm that the original God of War trilogy is being remade—and what better way to announce it than with the legendary TC Carson?”

While details on the remakes remain under wraps, Carson’s involvement in the announcement has fans hopeful that the “definitive” version of the Greek saga will honor the character’s roots.

Surprise Launch: God of War: Sons of Sparta

While fans wait for the remakes, they can dive into Kratos’ past. Developed by Mega Cat Studios in collaboration with the award-winning writers of God of War (2018) and Ragnarök.

Sons of Sparta, a prequel, follows a young Kratos and his brother, Deimos, as they undergo brutal training at the Spartan Agoge. TC Carson reprises his role as the elder Kratos, providing a reflective narration of his youth for the PlayStation 5.

The Series

Prime Video’s upcoming series adaptation has been announcing casting updates regularly, with the latest news that Ryan Hurst will star as Kratos and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will play Thor. The ensemble for this journey through the Nine Realms is shaping up to be legendary. Max Parker has been cast as the ever-watchful Heimdall and Teresa Palmer will play Sif, a goddess associated with Earth.

The series focuses on the emotional odyssey of Kratos and his son, Atreus. As they trek across ancient landscapes, Kratos struggles to teach his son how to be a god, while Atreus tries to remind his father what it means to be human.

Amazon is clearly all-in on this project, having already greenlit a two-season order. Pre-production is currently heating up in Vancouver with some serious heavy hitters at the helm. Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) is serving as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Barlog is also on board as an executive producer to ensure the experience stays authentic to the source material.
