If you have claustrophobia, you might want to watch this one with the lights on. 4Digital Media has officially announced that the critically acclaimed creature feature The Deep Dark (originally titled Gueules Noires) is tunneling its way onto digital platforms in the US and UK this March.
The movie is by Mathieu Turi. He’s the director behind Hostile and Meander—this film is being hailed as a “Lovecraftian The Descent.”
A 1,000-Meter Descent into Hell
Set in 1956, the story takes us to the coal mines of Northern France. It’s a place the locals call “Devil’s Island.” A veteran miner (Samuel Le Bihan) leads a shifty professor (Jean-Hugues Anglade) deep into a condemned sector of the mine to “collect samples.” However, a sudden landslide seals their only exit, trapping the crew in the suffocating darkness. While searching for a way out, the miners stumble upon an ancient, forgotten crypt that predates human history. They unknowingly wake Mok’noruth, a multi-armed, soul-eating deity that has been waiting in the dark for centuries.
Why Horror Fans are Buzzing
In an era of CGI overload, Turi opted for a massive, practical creature suit. The result is a visceral, terrifying monster that feels like it’s actually in the room (or the tunnel) with the actors. The film doesn’t just feature a monster; it builds a “cosmic horror” mythology. Keep your ears open for nods to the Necronomicon and the “Mad Arab” Abdul Alhazred.
Critics have praised the film’s lighting and sound design. Every creak of the mine and flicker of a headlamp adds to a sense of crushing dread.
Release Details
The Deep Dark will be unleashed on March 24, 2026. It will be available on VOD (Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Google Play) and specialized horror streamers like Chilling and Scare Network TV.
