If you miss the days when monsters were made of latex and slime instead of pixels, clear your weekend. Sorority of the Damned is a total love letter to old-school creature features. Co-directed by “Stranger Things” alum Joe Davison and SFX legend Roy Knyrim (the wizard behind SOTA FX), this horror-comedy features practical effects.
What’s the Story?
The plot is as wild as the monsters. Joe Davison stars as Trevor Harmony, a handyman who is… well, not great at his job.
Trevor’s life gets complicated when he finds out he’s actually descended from a line of legendary demon hunters. He’s forced to put those skills to the test when a religious zealot house mother (Felissa Rose) accidentally opens a portal to Hell. Now, Trevor has to team up with a group of sorority sisters to stop the elemental witches from turning the world into their personal playground.
Meet the Elemental Witches
The big bads of this flick are a quartet of resurrected sisters, each representing a different element. The makeup work here is insane—no CGI shortcuts, just pure “elemental” carnage. WWE powerhouse Katarina Leigh Waters represents Earth. Sarah French brings a creepy, ethereal vibe as Air that’ll make you want to hold your breath. Anna Sofie Christensen looks absolutely scorched and ready to burn it all down. Renee Daw rounds out the squad as water. Her aquatic design is straight-up nightmare fuel.
The Fan-Favorite: The Chode Troll
We need to discuss the Chode Troll. Designed by Marcel Banks, this creature is the perfect mascot for the film’s “over-the-top” energy. The SOTA FX team describes their creative process as “dedicated, educated, and highly medicated,” and honestly? Looking at this troll, that tracks.
