Get ready to dive into the history of cinematic scares. This March, Women’s History Month, Shudder is dropping a definitive deep dive into the architects of fear with the original documentary 1000 Women in Horror.
This documentary, directed by award-winning filmmaker Donna Davies, is based on the acclaimed book by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas.
The film officially hits the streaming platform on March 20th.
More Than Just “Scream Queens”
This isn’t your average “best of” list. 1000 Women in Horror is a sprawling, comprehensive look at how women have been the backbone of the genre since the very beginning in 1895. From the silent era to the modern “prestige horror” boom, the documentary explores how female directors, writers, and creators didn’t just participate in horror—they revolutionized it.
An All-Star Lineup of Horror Royalty
The doc features a “who’s who” of horror queens from the industry, offering fresh perspectives on trauma, practical effects, and the genre’s evolution. You can expect to see visionaries like Mary Harron (American Psycho), Akela Cooper (M3GAN), and Roxanne Benjamin (Body at Brighton Rock). Icons like Kate Siegel (Midnight Mass), Lin Shaye (Insidious), and Gigi Saul Guerrero (Satanic Hispanics) make an appearance. There are also experts like authors and historians like Kier-La Janisse and Alexandra Heller-Nicholas herself.
Meet the Director: Donna Davies
If you follow horror docs, you know Davies’ work. Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she’s the creative force behind genre staples like Zombiemania and Nightmare Factory. Known for her ability to tackle complex subjects with a fan’s heart and a scholar’s eye, Davies is also a dedicated mentor for underrepresented voices in the indie film scene.
